|
MOSCOW, Jun 22, 2001 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- Caspian sturgeons can be saved only if the countries sharing the sea agree on the rules of the species' joint management, director of the Institute for environment and evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Pavlov told reporters on Friday.
According to the academician, such an accord should cover an unconditional ban on fishery and commercial export of sturgeons.
Russian scientists have developed methods to reproduce artificially belugas by 100 percent and sturgeons - by 70 percent, Pavlov said.
However, "young Caspian countries are engaged in the unrestrained fishing of sturgeons in the sea", causing the populations to dwindle, the scientist said.
The countries sharing access to the Caspian sea include Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.
