The Fourth International Conference "Boundary and Interior Layers. Computational and Asymptotic Methods" was held in Novosibirsk, USSR from 7th to 11th July 1986. It was organized by the Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the Institute of Hydrodynamics, the Institute of Mathematics, the Novosibirsk Calculation Centre, the Krasnoyarsk Calculation Centre, as well as the Numerical Analysis Group, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.

This conference, the proceedings of which we present here, is the fourth of the series of international BAIL conferences and the first which was held outside Ireland.

A major role in the conception and organisation of the conference was played by the late Academician N.N.Yanenko. His wide ranging scientific activities and high international standing made it possible to attract leading scientists from many different countries of the world. This was an important contribution to the high scientific level of the conference. In addition several of the reports presented at the BAIL IV Conference contained continuations and developments of ideas formulated by N.N.Yanenko. His services on the International Steering Committee of the BAIL Conferences will be greatly missed in the future.

The combination of efforts by specialists in both theoretical investigations and practical problems has always been a feature of this series of conferences. This tradition was preserved successfully at the BAIL IV Conference in Novosibirsk. Consequently, this volume contains papers on methods for the solution of stiff systems of ordinary differential equations, investigations of singularly perturbed boundary value problems for ordinary and partial differential equations, solutions of problems in aero- and hydrodynamics, problems in physics and biology, problems in control theory and many other areas where boundary and interior layers occur.

The next conference in the series, BAIL V, will be held in 1988 in Shanghai, PRC. It will be hosted by the Shanghai University of Science and Technology under the Chairmanship of Professor Guo Ben-yu.

We have pleasure in thanking all the participants of the BAIL IV Conference and also the organisers whose efforts contributed to its success.
